Tāmaki Makaurau , AOTEAROA – New Zealand have beaten a South American team for the first time ever, as the All Whites outplayed Chile 4-1 in the FIFA Series at Eden Park.
Goals by Kosta Barbarouses, Eli Just, Jesse Randall and Ben Waine gave the crowd plenty to cheer as the All Whites played their last game on home soil ahead of June’s FIFA Men’s World Cup.
Chile, who played for more than an hour with 10 men after the dismissal of Dario Osorio, scored a late consolation goal by Gonzalo Tapia.
Logan Rogerson [Tainui] featured for New Zealand as a late substitute in the rout of the South Americans to earn his 18th appearance for his country.
The 27-year-old forward also featured in New Zealand’s 2-0 defeat to Finland three days earlier.
Wellington Phoenix midfielder and skipper, Alex Rufer [Ngāti Porou], replaced Joe Bell as a substitute in the second half of the Chile match.
Rufer [Ngāti Porou] was an unused substitute in the Finland game.
Rogerson was nominated for the prestigious Māori Senior Sportsman of the Year Award at last year’s Māori Sports Awards at Turangawaewae Marae.
